When the Dot NET generic top-level domain name extension was initially established in 1985, together with the first domain extensions on the Internet, it was supposed to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure organizations. Since there were no specific regulations about the usage of the top-level domain extension, though, .NET domains were booked and used for different purposes and by quite a few people. This extension is a great substitution for dot COM, notably if the necessary domain with the latter extension is not free for registration.
